Kingsbridge Amateur Dramatic Society (KATS) is a friendly local drama group which welcomes new members with an interest in acting, set construction, scenery painting, wardrobe or stage crew jobs. No experience necessary - just enthusiasm!
There are two productions a year: a musical in March and a play in September, either a comedy or drama, and both are staged at Marlborough Village Hall with raked seating and licensed bar. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Dodbrooke Hall in Church Street. The productions usually run for five performances for the musical (including Saturday matinée) and four for the play.
Every production needs more people behind the scenes than those performing on stage, so there are always support roles to fill, as well as Front of House helpers to sell programmes, ice creams and drinks. Setting up the production requires many hands to transport and build scenery, paint it, build the raked seating blocks and organise 208 seats for the audience.
There's also a social side to membership, with a Summer BBQ and an Autumn fundraising dinner/entertainment and mulled wine and mince pies at the last rehearsal of the year. A Photo Evening is held after each production, where photos of the show can be purchased for a nominal fee while enjoying a post-production get together.
KATS is a member of the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) which has made several awards to KATS shows over the years. The website www.kats-kingsbridge.co.uk gives up- to-date information on current productions and the Secretary, Pat Barlow, is happy to hear from anyone interested in joining the Society. She can be contacted by email: [email protected]
or phone 01548-853827. Annual membership rates for 2017 are as follows: £35 Full Membership (actors), £20 Associate Membership and a Student Membership at £15.
