A Nature Diary of the South Hams by Gordon Waterhouse

In nearly five decades of journalism I have rarely encountered a columnist with Gordon Waterhouse's depth of experience in his chosen subject. From the first time, ten years ago, that his Nature Diary appeared in South Hams Newspapers'  titles,  there was an immediate bond between writer and reader.  Many people would already have been familiar with Gordon's knowledge of the flora and fauna of the South Hams, but the newspapers exposed him to a much wider audience,  which has followed him faithfully  ever since.

This book is the result of friends urging Gordon to produce a miscellany of his columns - no easy task when so many have been written on such a variety of topics.  It is a book that can be read from cover to cover, or simply dipped into at random, but either way the reader will hope that Gordon assembles a  further selection of his newspaper columns before too long.

Prawle Point and the Coast between Start Point and Salcombe Bar - an Illustrated History by Roger Barrett.

The South Devon coast between Start Point and Salcombe Bar, with Prawle Point, the country's southernmost extremity, at its centre, is well known for its impressive scenery, geology and wildlife. It can also lay claim to a rich and eventful past.

Roger Barrett, local historian and Station Manager at the National Coastwatch Institution Lookout at Prawle Point, describes how people have sought, over the centuries, to defend this coast against the threat of invasion, piracy and smuggling, wrest a living from its shores and safeguard the lives of those in peril on the sea.
